In Hatha Yoga we work with the body and the breath to peel away layers of built-up tensions in order to free the body and mind from the overstimulation and stressors of our daily life. Through our work with the body we can shed all of the many roles we assume and proudly carry to just be with ourselves in the present moment, no matter how loaded or carefree that moment may be. We start to recognize the nature of the whirlwind mind, gain greater clarity and enjoy our lives more by being aware of each changing state of our being. We learn to appreciate the present moment and experience being just as we are, from moment to moment. This is the Union of Yoga:: body, breath, mind and spirit.
In my classes I enjoy teaching in a way that provides structure, in particular for those new to Hatha Yoga, while at the same time allowing for individual experimentation, so that practitioners with more experience on the mat can tap into the energetic subtleties of breath in form. A mixture of traditional Yoga Asanas in proper alignment with attention to a strong, vibrant core allows for flowing movements and embodied practices that work to massage and nourish the body-mind. In this way we work to boost our energy instead of deplete it, respectful of whatever it is we may bring to the mat on that particular day. We promote our health and well-being in a sustainable way that discourages the ego from taking charge in its constant need for affirmation and recognition. By leaving the need to achieve behind, we learn to listen to our inner dialogue of the heart and ultimately our yoga practice feeds our ability for compassion towards ourselves and others.
